Second Service of All the Dead

Saturday 3rd July 2004

A Full Day Visit With Private Tours Of Elton College & Dorney Court

Elton College & Dorney Court
Windsor, Berkshire

Saturday 3rd July 2004

Introduction

In “Service Of All The Dead” the Tudor manor house of Dorney Court was used as the work place of Ruth Rawlinson, which Morse visits during the episode. Eton College Chapel was also used in filming another episode and there are several suspects/murderers who came from such academic institutions (including John McKendrick the dashing gardener who in the “Ghost In The Machine” wears an old school tie as a belt).

Our day will start at 10.30 with a private extended tour of Eton College which was founded in 1440 by Henry VI and is one of the oldest schools in the country. Our visit will include the Upper and Lower Schools, College Chapel, the Museum of Eton Life and College Hall. The tour will last for just under 2 hours.

Next it is time for refreshment at probably the best restaurant in the area, and certainly the one with the finest view of the Thames and Windsor. We have arranged for a 3-course meal at Monty’s Riverside Restaurant situated alongside the boathouses of Eton College – and if weather permits we may dine on the veranda with views of the round tower, turrets and spires of Windsor Castle.

After lunch it is a 10 minute drive to the home of the Palmer family for the past 450 years, Dorney Court. This is a Grade I listed house build around the same time as Eton College and of great architectural importance. The house is only open to the public at certain times of the year so we have arranged a private tour with the Palmer’s who recall the filming that took place there in 1986.

Afterwards there is the option of a cream tea at the adjacent Walled Garden Centre.
